What is a Flexible Heater?

A flexible heater, or flex heater, is a device that can generate heat electrically or chemically with flexible mechanical properties. They are bendable and can adhere to a variety of surfaces, whether curved or linear.

They can be made using Flex PCBs, printed electronics, wires, and more. Loomia’s heating technology uses a unique mesh conductor, which creates an efficient and conformable component. Each of these methods meets a specific set of standards for heating and overall performance, as well as size, shape, and weight requirements.

Flexible Heater Features

The Loomia Electronic Layer can be designed to work as a resistive heating panel. We customize flexible heaters to your required shape and size and can embed safety components like NTCs or control PCBs.

Our custom heaters are engineered for versatility and are commonly integrated into different applications:

  • They can be used as a custom heater for medical devices such as heated garments and therapeutic wraps.

  • In automotive interiors, our flexible heaters can be applied to seating, steering wheels, door panels, and other interior surfaces where discreet, efficient heating is required.

  • Loomia heaters are custom designed for each application and to work with a range of power budgets. From 3.7V - 28V, heaters can be designed to reach up to 150F.

  • Heaters can terminate in wires, pigtails or PCBS. We can accommodate most standard pitch connectors.

The best way to understand our technology is to give it a test drive. This flexible heater was designed for those who would like to evaluate our heating functionality as a standalone feature. The 12V Flexible Heater comes with a barrel jack termination for testing out our heating functionality. The Flexible heater can heat up to 140°F and can come in a range of trims for your assessment. Our samples ship from our warehouse in 3 to 4 business days.

The Loomia 5V - 7.2V Flexible Heater is made to work with an off the shelf, 5V battery pack or two lipo batteries in series (just make sure both can output 2A safely) and will get hotter depending on the voltage you use. The heater warms up quickly with tangible heat within 60 seconds and a top heat after 2 min. Use this component for heating wearables, or for thermochromic effects. Loomia parts are designed to be easily soldered together, and work well with popular micro controllers like Arduino Nano and Teensy. The system revolves around Loomia's custom interconnect, which allows for a simple connection between buses. The interconnect can be soldered to headers for easy breadboarding. From fabric to wood, Loomia components can stick onto a range of materials, making your prototypes look clean and polished.
